FIN 211 Unit 2

Life Drawing

On the day of the life drawing, I was moving a bit slow and felt that I didn’t fully realise my drawings. However, I am very satisfied with the proportions and the postures I conveyed.

I began to insert more shading into the charcoal drawing that was a warm up for the two longer poses and am reasonably happy with my attempts to show lights and darks, given my limited experience in this area.

The first pose, I enjoyed trying to use the black background as the shadows. I felt the shorts were particularly successful. I am learning to figure out how to show the different values- such as putting white around the head.

In the final drawing I struggled to choose three colours that inspired me. I also found it challenging as I started with a side profile where I could barely see the model’s right eye but over time his head turned so that I saw his nose full on and more of the right eye. Because of my inexperience, I found it hard to adjust for this and found myself getting lost in details as it seemed the safest place to go.

I found it hard to identify the highlights and low-lights. Sometimes I will work from a photograph which I have converted to black and white to help me see this. It’s an area I will continue to work on. I tried my best but felt I still had a lot to learn.
