FIN 211 Unit 2

Research and Process-

My Artist Research from unit one also relates to this project:

Sandra Vásquez de la Horra uses a technique that interests me where she stiffens her drawings with wax in order to allow them to be sculpted into free-standing shapes. I would be interested to try this.

Ed Pien has a series called ‘Invasive Species’ that explores the beauty of several plants with green line drawings in a wide format. I like the repetition of the colour from piece to piece while each invasive species design clearly is unique. The wide format is also appealing.

He also has a series called ‘Ocean Drawing’ where he used ocean water mixed with white ink as part of his process. This gives me the idea to use creek water for a pen and ink drawing inspired by my local salmon stream.

Personal Experimental Drawing

I tried some different drawing techniques to try and get my thinking/ perceptions about drawing looser.

The first is called construct – deconstruct and explores themes of cubism and implied collage. I drew a quick self portrait, tore it up, scattered the pieces and then drew the torn up version.

The following are continuous line, blind drawing, 2 pencils tied together:

This website highlights 5 artists who are working with recycled fabrics and other materials:

  1. Zwia Lipkins works in upcycled upholstery fabric.
  2. Ruth Singer uses vintage fabrics and makes a feature of any rips, stains tears and darns.
  3. Elnaz Yazdani uses unconventional ‘found’ materials to combine with embroidery.
  4. Vanessa Barragoa uses recycled wool and other materials to weave, felt, embroider and macrame works of art.
  5. Julie Peppito is a thrifting activist- taking items and materials from thrift stores and from free items on the street to make mash-ups of contrasting objects and materials. They are intended as metaphors for how we connect to ourselves and to each other and our environments.
