Brainstorm 3 ideas
I wrote 3 haikus:
- Mycelium push
reach out for neighbours and food
eyes closed in the dark
~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Stories unravel
it used to be so easy
salmon swim away
~~~~~~~~~~
3. Ocean sings of life
invites us all to the dance
we don’t know the way
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m unsure what I will film for my video poem. I have a trip to Quadra at the weekend and might find some inspiration there.
Brainstorming
- A forest walk in familiar surroundings. Zooming in on small details, possibly mushrooms and fungus
- A ferry ride to Quadra- focussing on the movement of water and the sky.
- A study of geometry at Kinsol Trestle. Exploring the height and depth and the river below.
Video Poem
‘Small things make a day’
In the end I was stuck at home on a rainy weekend and started to think about interesting objects and their movements that I could film. I was drawn to a circular motif and started by filming a small retro fan in motion. I set it up against the wooden panelling of my interior wall and cleared other objects out of the way, including the power cord, which I ticked in behind. I set the camera and tripod on one small stool and the fan on another. I framed the shot and then set the fan in motion on the slowest setting and pressed the remote control on/off device. I chose the slowest setting so I could slow it down even more in the editing and hopefully get an interesting effect.
My next object is a food mixer and bowl, which I filmed from above by looping the tripod on a hook above my counter. I took several shots- firstly with the mixer on its side with the whisks turning. An lastly beating two eggs in the bowl.
In between these shots I cracked two eggs into the bowl- my third object/motion. This was also filmed from above- circles within circles plus a splash of colour.
My third video was the most involved to set up as I decided to film my eye. I set the camera and tripod on a stool that spins easily and faced it towards the wall. I then sat in front of the wall and worked out where to zoom in to capture my eye. I did this by looking at the knots in the wood and which one was approximately at my eye level. Then I took a lot of practise shots and made adjustments to the tripod as needed. The remote on/off switch was invaluable here. I made a video of me looking at the camera, looking up to left, back at the camera and then down to the right. I figured I would give myself plenty of options when it comes to editing.
Lastly, I wanted to capture flowing water so I staged and filmed pouring water from the kettle into the teapot. I made sure I had a full kettle and I poured slow and steady to get maximum footage.
Afterwards I realised that my filming wasn’t closely related to my haikus so I wrote a few more and landed on this one:
Small things make a day
Like stacking logs in August
One by one by one
I also looked on Freesound.org and found a clip of stacking logs and another one of lapping waves in preparation for editing.
