Lab 02 Mash Up
New relationship of objects- explore how two (or more) objects might interact, integrate or collide
I took my objects from the ‘Object Analysis’ and added some new items. I was drawn to the fir cone and a paint brush. The commonality of these two is that I really like to paint with fir cones and the paint brush has the same purpose.
I thought about how I might combine the two and decided to try and release the bristles from the brush to look at the components.
Using a vice, I squeezed the metal of the brush and the bristles released in one go. My thought was to glue some of the bristles into the cone to combine the objects and so create a new one.
At this point I decided to bend the metal of the brush some more to see if I could insert the cone. This succeeded and I added some hot glue for stability.

I carefully placed glue and bristles in several openings of the cone. My plan is to use it to paint with.
A second mash up I did was to take the pen and add bristles to create a caterpillar. As I was nearing the end of the project, I questioned whether it was too literal. It was certainly enjoyable to wrap the pen in pipe cleaners and glue on the bristles and I got a sense of nostalgia for childhood crafts, which might be what drew me to trying this. My conclusion was that the fir cone brush is the stronger of my two mash ups- both in concept and aesthetics.
