Peer Feedback Exercise
For our first project, some students chose organic objects and others went for something man-made. There were many different techniques such as weaving, twisting and coiling. There was also a variety of scales- some sculptures being actual size and others being a magnification of the original object.
Each student chose something that was meaningful to them. Every sculpture came with a story or personal connection. This was very interested and resulted in some animated conversations. The way we shared ideas and origin stories of our art was very respectful and it seemed there was a lot of deep listening, which was/is great to be a part of. All of the sculptures explored the aspect of negative space, using expressive lines and implied lines to lead the audience to fill in the spaces from their imagination or experience.
A unique solution that I enjoyed was the coffee cup- that part of the original cup structure became a spill of coffee and that a reinforcement wire was inserted to allow the spiral of the cup to stand up. Another solution I enjoyed was the way the handle turned on the music box- it gave me a feeling of nostalgia for the wind-up toys of my childhood, as well as being very ingenious. I also loved the notebook coil that was repurposed and reshaped to make the dynamic form of the tape measure, eloquently suggesting movement.
Observing other people’s work gave me ideas of techniques I might try in the future, such as weaving. But more than that, I was taken with the creativity and imagination we all shared and the vast variety of objects chosen, techniques used and works of art created. It encouraged me to continue thinking ‘outside the box’ as I proceed with the next assignment.
